It was built in the 13th century from field stones as a three-aisled basilica in the late Romanesque style, rebuilt in the late Gothic around 1500 and changed in the 19th century. Since the church is not located directly on the market square, it is often assigned to the castle area. However, this is not correct, especially since it is much older than the castle.

City Church of St. Marien Altlandsberg
Brandenburg fieldstone churches are often located on the village green or on the market square. However, this sacred building is not located on the city's market square, but a few meters further north: it is assumed that the first Slavs settled there. Dendrochronological investigations of an oak frame in the chancel showed that the current church was built around 1250 with the urban expansion of Altlandsburg. It probably replaced a previous wooden structure built by Christianized Slavs or Wettin margraves.[1] In 1375 the church patronage lay with the Premonstratensian monastery in Gramzow, the oldest documented place in the Uckermark.
