Hard to imagine today, but it is true: a tar stove was built on the Apolloberg, which used to be called Eichelberg, in 1708, and a few years later even an inn with a youth hostel.

Nestled in the depths of the Tegel Forest, hidden from the prying eyes of most hikers, lies the mystical Apolloberg. Its history dates back to 1708, when a tar kiln was built on its property. In later years, an inn followed, which not only accommodated the thirsty and hungry, but also welcomed travelers to its youth hostel.

Its former name, Eichelberg, may sound less poetic, but it has by no means lost its meaning over time. Until recently, Mount Apollo was characterized by a different, more profound mysticism. Instead of man-made crosses, one found artfully arranged branches and roots, whose origin was as shrouded in mystery as their meaning. An unknown artist had managed to create impressive masterpieces from the simplest elements of the forest that captivated the viewer.

The path to Apolloberg may be more difficult and less obvious than that to Ehrenpfortenberg, but that's exactly what makes it so attractive.
