A very clean and idyllic rafting pond.

The use of the forests of Wurzelberg and Lindig for forestry began as early as the 13th century. Since there were no fixed roads and paths back then, the rivers were used to transport logs down the valley. Rafting was only possible when the rivers were flooded. In addition, raft ponds were built at the tributaries to the Katzen, the dams of which could be opened if necessary in order to use this water reserve to extend the flood period. These included the Wulstteich, Schellertsteich, Höllenteich, Mittelbacher Teich, Jungfrau-, Altfrau- and Reichenbachteich as well as 2 Apelsbachteich. Log rafting came to an end in 1873.

At the outlet tunnel of the Höllenteich you can see "rusty stalactites". This is iron ocher. The natural formation of iron ocher occurs when iron-rich pore water or groundwater with low oxygen content emerges. The oxygen in the air then oxidizes the iron contained in the water. Iron and copper have long been the most used natural resources in the Thuringian Forest.
