The actual source, called the Siegfrieds source, is not located at the source socket at the foot of the Felsenmeer, but higher up, at the height of the giant column on the so-called "Kleiner Felsenmeer".

The source is named after the hero Siegfried from the Nibelungenlied. However, it is not clear why this spring was named after him. As with the many Siegfrieds fountains in the region, one can only speculate whether this is the place where Hagen's famous murder of the hero Siegfried was committed.
