The small chapel "Portiunkula" (Porziuncola), one of the most important and original sanctuaries of the Franciscan religious communities, stands in the middle of the nave of the large baroque cathedral "Santa Maria degli Angeli".

The Portiuncula Chapel, located in the valley of Assisi, has a very special meaning for Francis. Here, after a long search and struggle, he heard Jesus' mission in concrete terms. Just like the little church of San Damiano, Francis also rebuilt this chapel with his own hands. In this way, the Portiuncula symbolically becomes a place from which the new life for Francis and his brotherhood grows.
The Transitus Chapel is also in the immediate vicinity. According to legend, this is where Francis lay naked on the bare ground in his dying hour. Even as he was dying, Francis held on to his “Mistress Poverty”.
In the 16th century, the small portiuncula and the Transitus Chapel were integrated into the new building of the mighty papal basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
