Renovations are always going on here! Not surprising for a 900-year-old building (first documented in 1120). Freiburg Minster, by the way, not only boasts the "most beautiful tower in Christendom," but also set a precedent. As the only cathedral completed in the Gothic period, it has been copied countless times in parts (or the Freiburg architects later worked on larger projects – almost like in football today). Just look at Strasbourg, Cologne (the world's largest cathedral), and Ulm (the world's tallest church tower)!

The Freiburg Minster (or Münster Our Lady) is built in the Romanesque and mostly Gothic style Roman Catholic parish church of Freiburg im Breisgau. It was built from about 1200 to officially 1513. Since Freiburg has been a bishopric since 1827 (Archbishopric of Freiburg), the church is today formally a cathedral, but is traditionally called "Münster" and not "cathedral". The Münster community belongs to the pastoral care unit Freiburg middle in the deanery of Freiburg.
The well-known art historian Jacob Burckhardt said in 1869 in a lecture series on the 116 -meter-high tower in comparison with Basel and Strasbourg: And Freiburg will probably remain the most beautiful tower on earth. From this evolved probably the often heard, but not quite literal quote from the "most beautiful tower of Christendom". Art historians from around the world praise the Cathedral of Our Lady of Freiburg as an architectural masterpiece of Gothic.

A very beautiful and worth seeing place. The climb to the tower can be reached via a long and narrow wall staircase, and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view. The bellworks can also be viewed, which are also very loud at the right time.

The Freiburg Minster "Our Lady" is today both the parish church and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. In addition, the Minster is a national cultural monument with one of the most beautiful towers on earth and is one of the few large Gothic churches that were completed in the Middle Ages and survived the numerous wars almost unscathed.

Impressive architecture, go in definitely worth it! Schlossberg also has an excellent view of the building from a distance.

The Freiburg Minster is Freiburg's source of strength. The Münsterbauhütte has been taking care of the central building in Freiburg for as long as I can remember. It is said that it was deliberately spared during the bombing of Freiburg in World War II.
Detailed information about the church - also called "Münster of Our Lady" - here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freiburger_M%C3%BCnster
You should take some time to visit. There are so many exciting things to discover. You pay admission for the choir (which is worth it).
Climbing the tower also costs extra money. For this adventure via the very narrow spiral staircase up to the viewing platform and the bells of the cathedral, the €5 per adult (as of 2022) is well spent. The entrance is outside on the south side of the tower.

A beautiful tower! Finally renovated? Unfortunately no - it's starting again, such an old building always needs its patches here and there ...
The ascent takes place in 3 sections. It is easy for slim people. However, the "oncoming traffic" on the narrow stairs can make the ascent (or descent) more difficult for less slim people. There isn't much room to dodge! I know other buildings where such problems are controlled by a traffic light system with adjusted break times in each direction. In my opinion, this tower would be a suitable candidate for such a solution.
At the top, the views are spectacular in all directions, and the view of the towering spire from below is simply stunning. A masterpiece of architecture, absolutely worth seeing!

As a cathedral, the Minster of Our Lady is the center of liturgical life in the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Built by the citizens in the Middle Ages as a parish church and only elevated to an episcopal church in 1821/27, it has always remained the city church and spiritual center of Freiburg.

The uniquely beautiful openwork tower, which Basel art historian Jacob Burckhardt described as the “most beautiful tower on earth,” and the abundance of art objects attract countless art lovers and vacationers.

Freiburg Minster. Curious ... it does not belong to the Catholic Church! The owner is the city of Freiburg, together with the archbishop's ordinariate and the Catholic Foundation Council of Münsterpfarrei.
And ... the Münsterfabrikfonds is responsible for the maintenance on the outside and the Freiburg Münsterbauverein for the inside. (Wikipedia)

The Freiburg Minster (or Minster of Our Lady) is the Roman Catholic parish church of Freiburg im Breisgau, begun in the Romanesque style and largely completed in the Gothic and late Gothic style.
It was built between about 1200 and 1513.
In the course of the founding of the ecclesiastical province of Freiburg, the church became the episcopal seat of the metropolitan diocese of Freiburg in 1827; thus the Freiburg Minster was elevated from the parish church to the metropolitan church and has been formally a "cathedral" ever since, although it is traditionally still referred to as a "minster".
The Minster parish belongs to the Freiburg Mitte pastoral unit in the Freiburg deanery.

The Freiburger Münsterbauverein, founded in 1890 out of the urgent need to renovate the cathedral, runs the cathedral construction works and is responsible for maintaining the cathedral's exterior. He does not have ownership of the building. The Münsterfabrikfonds or the Domfabrikfonds is responsible for the interior, the vestibule, the bells and the organ. This division of labor was established in 1891 by a decree of the Archbishop Ordinariate and still exists today.

The market now takes place every weekday morning, which is unique in Germany.
Only on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the cathedral, does the square remain free of market stalls.
On around 10,000 square meters, 80 to 180 (Saturdays) market stalls offer food, handicrafts and souvenirs.
The north side, the farmers' market, is reserved for local farms with essentially their own products.
On certain occasions, such as the Freiburg Wine Festival, some market stalls have to move into the surrounding streets and sometimes onto Kaiser-Joseph-Straße.
Since the daily cleaning after the market by sweepers hollowed out the joints, they had to be filled with new quartz sand from time to time.
That's why mechanical cleaning only takes place four times a year and those who supply the market have to take their waste back with them.
Until the Freiburg pedestrian zone was created in the 1970s, the square was used as a parking lot in the afternoons.
