In terms of the legal situation, the Freiburg Minster is something special. From the beginning, the minster did not belong to the church.

Around 1200, the Zähringer Berthold V ordered the construction of today's cathedral. As patron and main donor, he was responsible for the Minster. After the death of the founder, rights and obligations initially passed to his heirs, the Counts of Freiburg. However, after the counts no longer met their obligations due to lack of money from the middle of the 13th century, the citizens took over responsibility for the construction of the cathedral and set up many foundations. In 1295 there is a reference to the Münster factory fund for the first time. The "fabrica ecclesiae" itself was mentioned for the first time in 1314: this legal institution encloses the cathedral building and the fund intended for its preservation. This "fabrica ecclesiae" was subordinate to the city council, which appointed minster caretakers who, with numerous employees, ensured the new buildings and conversions as well as repairs.

The “Zähringer” is an approximately 75-kilometer-long, three-stage long-distance hiking trail that connects Neuenburg am Rhein with St. Peter.
Hikers enjoy the Rhine Valley with its almost southern flair, experience Breisgau with Staufen and Freiburg before reaching the climatic health resort of St. Peter in the picturesque Black Forest.
The combination of vineyards and forests, castles and towers, towns and cities as well as possible detours to the Roman thermal baths or various inns to enjoy delicious regional food are wonderfully characteristic.
The name of the long-distance hiking trail is a reminiscence of the Swabian royal family of Zähringen, which resided at Zähringen Castle near Freiburg im Breisgau.
