The namesake for this premium hiking trail is the basalt rock of Ulmenstein, which once rose above the surrounding forests.

While around the elm stone dense, old mixed forest of beech, maple, ash and of course elm dominates the picture, the rest of the trail runs through varied open country. Meadow areas, fields, hedges and orchards alternate with each other in a continuous sequence and the hilly relief is typical of the landscape of the Kuppenrhön.

Often the route also leads across Mediterranean seeming Kalkmagerrasen. These areas are called skinny, because they are poor in yield - high is however the biodiversity. Experience stations at selected rest areas also provide information about these valuable habitats and make the emergence and cultivation of the Rhön cultural landscape tangible.

Constant companion on the hike is the summit of the Linzberg, a basalt cone like the neighboring Ulmenstein. Another formative element of the extra tour are the two picturesque hillside chapels near Mittelaschenbach and Hofaschenbach. Especially from here the view extends far to the nearby and distant Rhönberge as well as into the Nüsttal.

In sum, the extra tour "Ulmenstein" offers a great variety of experiences and plenty of variety in the smallest of spaces.
