Nowhere else in Hesse is there such a large occurrence of this plant that thrives on the nutrient-poor limestone soil.

However, the biodiversity on the site in the east of Hünfeld, which extends above the JVA, has decreased in recent years, reports Ewald Sauer from the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. As the representative of the Upper Nature Conservation Authority, he is responsible for the area, which is largely owned by the city of Hünfeld. "In order to maintain and improve the quality of the nature reserve, we are now starting with a new concept: For around two weeks, a shepherd has led around 400 sheep and 40 goats to the area every day and out again in the evening, seven days a week .

The Via Regia viewing point was created in 2013/14 by excavating earth according to the plans of landscape architect Ludger Hinz from Hünfeld. The 7.5-meter-high platform on the Rößberg mountain supports a 3.5-meter-high cross.
