One of the few saints who are also highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in German-speaking countries as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth, the son of wealthy parents, he was more of a bon vivant, but later turned to Christ. In the half-ruined little church of San Damiano, located on the hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, he was praying one day and heard the voice of Christ coming down from the cross, calling on him to “rebuild his church”. At first he took this request literally and restored the church building; later he realized that this was primarily about the church as the community of believers.
Many people joined him and the Order of the Friars Minor of Francis of Assisi was created. Today there are three male branches in the broad Franciscan religious family: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; as well as two female ones: the Franciscan Sisters and the Poor Clares.
His Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco, which did not exist during Francis' lifetime, is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan religious family. It can be found here as a hiking highlight under this link:

This Holy Mountain is located above Orta and the lake and overlooks at least two thirds of the entire Cusio region. Its wealth of art and architecture is impressive, not to mention the unique atmosphere that prevails here and captivates every visitor. More than other structures of this type, this one blends completely into the surrounding nature.

Since the early Middle Ages, the Church of San Nicholao, the oldest parish church on the entire eastern shore, has stood here at a height of 400 m. The so-called Madonna della Pietà, a wooden sculpture from the 15th century that still exists today, was venerated in it. In 1538, the municipality of Orta decided to found a monastery following the example of the Holy Mountain of Varallo and to surround it with chapels dedicated to Saint Francis. So the convent was handed over to the Franciscans in 1590, and at the same time the Church of San Nicholao underwent a thorough renovation. Work on the chapels continued in the following years.
All 20 chapels were completed between the end of the 16th century and the late 18th century. They form a spiral path above the lake shore, where pilgrims have many opportunities to reflect in the shade of the lush vegetation and in front of the breathtaking panorama over the lake.

Important artists were involved in the completion of the complex. The result is a successful mix of different artistic movements: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicism.

In 1980, the Piedmont region declared the mountain a special nature reserve in order to better protect both the artistic and ecological riches.
