Bidon Bleu is part of a series of interventions in which Signer launches objects using a ramp.

The residue of this sculptural action is the material work of art that remains in the museum afterwards. A lasting reminder of the action of the moment for those present, and a stimulus for the imagination of future visitors.

Roman Signer rewrites the definition of sculpture with his work. He adds three new dimensions to it: 'action', 'space' and 'time'.

Signer always works according to the same structure, built up in three phases. First there is the basic form, which carries the possibility to change. Then follows the action, the actual process in which the change is carried out. What remains is the trace: the distorted object or its remains.

Time is an important dimension of sculpture for Signer. He deals with it in various ways throughout his oeuvre. Because his work causes movement, it often takes up a large space, sometimes the space of a museum, sometimes even the distance between two villages.

His austerity in materials contrasts sharply with the imaginative elaboration of his projects. This is where the scientist meets the sorcerer's apprentice. The result is a transverse oeuvre that does not give in to trends or aesthetic expectations. With a limited number of recurring elements, Signer creates a world that continues to surprise. At the beginning of his career, in the early 1970s, he investigated the properties of water, sand and stone with almost scientific precision.

During the performance on May 26, 2012, a blue metal barrel, from a height of fifteen meters and a distance of about thirty-five meters, rolled down a ramp at high speed to explode against a concrete wall. A video of this performance can be viewed in a display case near the work.
