Alkmaar's markets and why they attract the crowds...
South of the Waagplein was the "Vismarkt" (Fish Market) on the corner of the streets Mient and Verdronkenoord.
The simple covered fish stalls were first built in the 16th century and renovated around 1755. Fish was sold here until 1998.
The wooden and stone pillars were later replaced by cast iron pillars to protect against salt corrosion. The fish were sold on the stone tables, mostly after being stored in baskets in the canal behind the shack. The door gave access to the canal, which was also used to transport the fish. Until the end of the 19th century, most food and agricultural products were also traded at street markets in Alkmaar.
The larger the city, the more specialized street markets there were. Alkmaar also had a 'Paardenmarkt' (horse market) and a 'Turfmarkt' (peat market): peat was the most important domestic fuel until about 1870. Nowadays, many of the older residents in particular still prefer to shop at the markets: for example at the weekly market every Wednesday on the "Europaplein Huiswaard", on Saturdays at the weekly market along the "Gedempte Nieuwesloot" and in the well-known cheese shop "Kaan's Kaashandel", which is open on weekdays ' in the 'Koorstraat'.
