Nice place with great gastronomy and many destinations. The St. Stephen's Church, which is well worth seeing, and the Bütgenbacher See are definitely worth a visit. At the tourist information you can get everything you need for your visit, maps, flyers and of course souvenirs.

History

Bütgenbach was first mentioned under the Carolingians in the 9th century as an outpost of the Büllinger Hof. The first documented mention in 1130 can be found in a list of taxes to the Malmedy Abbey. From 1200 to 1214, the area around Bütgenbach belonged to the land of the Counts of Luxembourg and then, through marriage, to the Duchy of Limburg.

In 1237, the Lords of Limburg ordered the construction of Bütgenbach Castle on the north side of the town on a rocky outcrop on the banks of the Warche. Bütgenbach thus became the center of an area known as the Bütgenbach Hof. In addition to Bütgenbach, the court area included the towns of Berg, Elsenborn, Faymonville, Nidrum, Sourbrodt and Weywertz.

In 1265, the farm was inherited by the House of Falkenburg, which also owned the areas of Monschau and later Sankt Vith. In 1300, Walram von Falkenburg authorized the founding of a monastery, De Porta Coeli (Gate of Heaven), on his estate in Bütgenbach.

Beautiful place—perhaps the busiest place on a Stoneman tour, along with Malmedy and St. Vith. A nice place to stop for a break opposite the stamping point.
