In the 18th century, one or more elevations or rocks of the Königshain Mountains were called Eulfinckenstein, Eulstein, Eulenstein, Zeisigberg or Zeisigstein. The present work aims to clarify their location, the extent of their current rock formation and the possible connection to the Teufelsstein rock formation. For this purpose, historical writings, maps and drawings were evaluated and our own site surveys were carried out. This showed that the names Eulenstein and Zeisigstein only applied to a single rock group in the Hochstein area. Gersdorf (1789) and Zobel (in Schmidt 1797) subdivided them into the Eulenstein as the main rock and the Zeisigstein as the immediately adjacent smaller rock cliff. In the first half of the 19th century the names were displaced against the background of the growing interest in the legends of the region. Afterwards Preusker (1841) named this rock formation for the first time as the Devil's Stone. As the new name caught on in common parlance, the old names fell into oblivion. This was already noticed by stock (1922a and b) while exploring the Königshain Mountains. One possible explanation was provided by a local resident who reported the destruction of the Owl Stone around 1870. However, this message turned out to be flawed and inapplicable, as the granite quarrying did not cover the rock. Eulenstein and Zeisigstein referred to a rock formation that is now called Teufelsstein. It is located about 350 m northwest of the Hochstein and comprises a larger elongated rock and a rock cliff in front of it to the north. A comparison with the historical images from 1782 and 1797 shows that the rock formation has remained unchanged to this day despite the earlier granite quarrying in the Hochstein area.

one of the few granite rocks that did not fall victim to the quarry work. Sure-footed and experienced mountaineers can also climb via the Alter Weg (I) without a safety rope.

The Teufelsstein is a wonderful resting place with its stacked stone blocks in the middle of the forest. Somehow there is the big and the small devil stone and with us we even saw "3 golden hairs" of the devil (:-)
