In the midst of a charming landscape, the museum provides insights into the working and living conditions of stone workers in the Königshain mountains. Granite was quarried here for more than 130 years, and its special structure made it easy to process into building material and paving stones. In the construction of the Görlitz Neisse Viaduct and the New Lighthouse at Cape Arkona on the island of Rügen, stone from Königshain was used. In a former social and blacksmith building, visitors can find out about the hard work in the quarries. Interested parties get to know the entire history of the stone from breaking to processing as a plaster. On the basis of selected exhibits and eyewitness reports, the physically difficult work in the quarry can be understood. Another part of the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the geology of the Königshain Mountains and explains the origin and special features of Königshain granite. In the outdoor area of the museum three so-called "stonemason booths" can be seen, which with their furnishings represent the activity of the paving stones in a comprehensible and realistic manner. Machines for stone processing are exhibited in a rebuilt building. The air compressor in the compressor house, which weighs tons, is an extraordinary technical monument and gives an idea of the effort that was required to supply the quarries with compressed air.

The Königshainer Berge granite mining museum is part of the route of industrial culture in Saxony!
The museum will reopen on May 1st, 2022.

Today's Königshainer Berge Granite Mining Museum is located in a former commercial building of the Königshainer Granitwerkhe C. von Thaden & Co. GmbH. Here, on the ground floor of the main building, there was a forge with several forge fires and, since 1941/42, the company kitchen. The stone workers ate their meals on the first floor. On August 20, 1995, the Königshainer Heimatverein opened the Königshainer Berge Granite Mining Museum. It is thanks in particular to former stone workers such as Lutz Neugebauer that objects relating to stone mining from all over Upper Lusatia were collected here and saved from being scrapped. The Königshainer Heimatverein itself contributed a large number of objects, but private loans were also included in the exhibition. Large equipment such as the stone saws and the compressor system were and are particularly impressive for visitors. From then on, the museum supplemented the educational trail opened in 1992. E Jul
