A special feature of the old Göttingen city cemetery is the “Nobel Rondell” by the small pond - a memorial for the eight Nobel Prize winners who have found their final resting place here, including Otto Hahn, Max Planck Max Born, David Hilbert and Friedrich Wöhler.
The city cemetery as a place of rest and reflection, but also an ensemble of horticultural, architectural and sculptural design is definitely worth a visit.

A total of 44 Nobel Prize winners had or have relationships with the Georg-August University of Göttingen, which thus occupies a top position worldwide. This high number is mainly due to the flowering of the natural sciences, which attracted scientists from all over the world to Göttingen in the first half of the 20th century. After all, eight Nobel Prize winners, who are particularly honored at this point, have found their final resting place in the Göttingen city cemetery.

To commemorate these eight scientists in particular, the memorial was erected on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Göttingen city cemetery. Its design is based on an idea by Hans Otto Arnold, who suggested the shape of the Gaussian seventeen-corner, the construction of which the nineteen-year-old Carl Friedrich Gauß had succeeded for the first time with just a compass and ruler.

The memorial was financed by donations, designed and planned by Hans Otto Arnold from the working group Cemetery Culture, the implementation was realized by the Göttingen stonemason guild. Various city buses stop at the Jheringstraße bus stop, the way to the roundabout is signposted.
