    From the Budapest:
Controversy over monument to István Tisza
    Jun 11, 2014

Against the background of the construction of a monument to the conservative statesman István Tisza, a left-leaning columnist criticizes the government for maintaining historical continuity through the memory of the politician of the early 20th century. A pro-government commentator believes that left and liberal politicians still can not make peace with the Hungarian past and with national heroes.

In the course of the reconstruction of the square in front of the Parliament building, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán unveiled a monument in honor of István Tisza (1861-1918) on Whit Monday. The original statue, erected in 1934, had been destroyed during the Second World War. In his speech, Orbán praised Tisza for his efforts to rebuild a strong nation after a period of failed liberal rule. The head of government pointed out that liberals and socialists often treated nationalism with contempt. This is an important ideology that helps to strengthen solidarity across classes. In a press release, the MSZP stated that István Tisza was a politician who rejected progressive ideas and therefore could not represent the unity of the nation.

By rebuilding the Tisza monument, Prime Minister Orbán sends the message that he stands for a conservative aristocratic rule that defends the elite, writes Miklós Hargitai in Népszabadság. The author believes that Tisza passionately rejected any democratic reforms during his reign. Hungary approached "total collapse" during the First World War. Instead of presenting Prime Minister Tisza as exemplary, the left-wing columnist suggests that Hungary should follow the tradition of conservative-liberal politician István Bethlen, who led the Hungarian recovery after the First World War.
