The Schmitte farm was first mentioned in 1412 as a forest smithy owned by the House of Gleiberg, i.e. as an iron hammer whose hammer mechanism was powered by the water of the Bieber. The probably first knightly owner, Henne von Rodheim, built a fortified manor house next to the hammer. In the 16th century, the Schmitte passed through marriage and inheritance to Markus Andreas Lesch, who was in the service of Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous of Hesse in the Peasants' War and against the Anabaptists. Lesch turned the iron hammer into a grinding mill in 1550, but operations did not stop until 1955. (Monument topography). The Schmitte is a protected cultural monument.

The former farm has been converted into a restaurant and hotel. The renovation has not yet been completed, but operations are already underway. The restaurant with beer garden is rather expensive, but offers a nice ambience and delicious food.
