The three-aisled hall church was built between 1290 and 1340. One source says the consecration took place around 1346. It is the successor to a late Romanesque sacred building that was administered by the provosts of Kemberg from 1330 onwards. In 1415, the sacristy and the south-eastern vestibule were built according to plans by Matthias Löser. From 1856 to 1859, the neo-Gothic, 86-metre-high west tower, which towers over the town, was built according to plans by Friedrich August Ritter after the old tower collapsed.

According to tradition, Martin Luther, who visited Kemberg 14 times, probably preached in the church just as often. On the night of February 21-22, 1546, Luther's coffin was laid out in the church. The church had an altar by Lucas Cranach the Younger from 1565, which was destroyed in a fire on the night of November 8th to 9th, 1994. After years of discussion and a subsequent competition, the artist Arnulf Rainer from Austria created a modern cross for the chancel.

The church has testimonies of faith that are of great importance in terms of art history, such as remains of late medieval wall paintings, a sandstone tabernacle, a carved altar from the 15th century, a baptismal font and the interior painting by Michael Adolf Siebenhaar.

The special features on the gallery include the 35 pictures of the first book of Moses, which range from the creation of the world and man, through the flood and Jacob's blessing to the dream of the Pharaoh.

The winged altar was commissioned in 1564 by Matthias Wanckel, son-in-law of Bartholomäus Bernhardi. Bernhardi was provost in Kemberg from 1518 and a friend of Martin Luther's from childhood - in 1521 he married Kemberg's bourgeois daughter Gertraud Pannier and founded the Protestant parish family with her. According to tradition, he was the first clergyman to marry and not be executed for it.
