Mesimvria zone was a colony of Samothrace, built at the end of the 7th century BC. BC, on the south coast of Thrace, between Maroneia and Alexandroupolis. The site is mentioned by two names because it was originally known as Mesimvria, while in the light of recent archaeological evidence it has been identified as the 'Zone' which was also a colony of Samothrace.

The city flourished in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. BC, but began to decline during the Macedonian and later Roman rule as the construction of roads in the hinterland had downgraded the importance of the coastal city. However, there is evidence of sporadic habitation on the site as early as the 6th century AD.

Excavations on the site have been carried out continuously since 1966 and have brought to light the fortification wall with the towers, private houses within the fortified area, the design of the city with the road network, public buildings, a sanctuary of Demeter and a temple of Apollo. Also of interest is a small, isolated part of the city, to the southwest, which in the Hellenistic period was enclosed by a separate wall and had a different layout.

The cemetery was outside the fortified area, west of the city.
