As a "game round" Altenburger citizens and noblemen devised the Skat in 1813, they could not know that their game creation would take such a unique triumphant march through the German leisure culture. In honor of the most beloved and played by the Germans card game built in 1903 from private donations the Skatbrunnen. (Source: thüringen.info)

When a "round of games" from Altenburg citizens and noblemen came up with Skat in 1813, they could not have known that their game creation would be a great success. In honor of the card game most loved and played by the Germans, the skat fountain was built in 1903 from private donations. The four farmers, the Wenceslas, fight for supremacy, with the “acorn under” winning, of course. In the square is the Skat Fountain, the only known monument to a card game. The fountain sculpture shows fighting Wenceslas on the base. Many skat players come to the fountain to baptize their cards in the water, which is said to bring luck to the player.
