The Lindenau Museum houses one of the most valuable special collections of early Italian panel paintings in the world. The paintings on wood from the 13th to 16th centuries show the development of Italian painting and are the basis for the museum's international standing. They are the work of the natural scientist, statesman and patron Bernhard August von Lindenau (1779–1854) and have been open to the public since 1848.

The museum is currently being renovated.

Museum opened in 1876 based on the models of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Dresden Picture Gallery. It is said to have the largest collection of early Renaissance Italian panel paintings outside of Italy, with some real gems, at least for those in the know. In addition, more recent paintings up to the present, including works by the artist Gerhard Altenbourg, who is associated with Altenburg. The collection of plaster casts of famous sculptors' works on the ground floor is atmospheric, and there are also special exhibitions.
