In addition to the sun playground, which can be found a little further south in the Eilenriede am Schiffgraben, the WAKITU - the forest children's play area - is the first playground in Hanover. It was planned in 1895 by the then horticultural master Julius Trip with the redesign of the northern Eilenriede as a recreation area and was initially nothing more than a sandpit with a railing around it and a shelter. A paddling island, a nursing home and other climbing equipment were added later.
The WAKITU is always worth a trip - in the middle of the forest and yet very centrally located next to the shopping streets in List and Oststadt, with a kiosk, rest benches for parents, tables and benches for picnics or originally intended for fathers playing cards, in the pleasant green shade of tall trees.
