Essential elements of sign language go back to F. Moritz Hill. From 1830 to 1874 he managed what was then known as the institute for the deaf and dumb in Weißenfels, which was initially located in the nearby Jägerhof and later in Langendorfer Straße. He wrote numerous textbooks that are still the basis for communication between people who cannot hear and speak.
