Herkerode was once the most important women's abbey of the Cistercian order in the Netherlands and has an eventful past, whose roots go back to the year 1180. Since the 14th century, the abbey was a major pilgrimage site and made its name through the magnificent green and flourishing areas, especially herbs played a role. At the beginning of the 17th century, the monastery became a victim of the Confessional War, from which it only recovered at the end of the century. After the French Revolution, it finally came to sale and dismemberment. Today, the abbey shines again in its old splendor. Contributing significantly to this are the two lovingly modeled herb gardens.

Herkenrode Abbey site is located in a special nature reserve. The Agency for Nature and Forests stimulates the development of a cultural-historical landscape with maximum natural value, in which people and nature each have their place. The redevelopment of the nature reserve is based on two pillars: the restoration of historic land use and more room for water.

The agricultural lands have been converted into ecologically valuable areas. Wet and dry grasslands, swamp zones, standard orchards, hedgerows, coppice groves and pools now define the landscape. The ecological added value of this project is clear. Birds that feel at home in wet, open spaces find their way to Herkenrode. Amphibians, insects and butterflies appreciate the nature restoration offer and a rich natural landscape is also attractive to visitors.
