One of the many gates of the Nuremberg city wall

The wall area at the Spittlertor are remnants of the old city wall. Inside the wall, the street is called Spittlertormauer and the main street outside is called Spittlertorgraben. The gate was built in 1377.

The Spittlertor is an old gate in the southwest of Nuremberg's city wall. The name refers to the then nearby St. Elisabeth Hospital.[1]

The Spittlertor Tower, one of the four striking, round main towers of Nuremberg's city fortifications, is named after the Elisabeth Hospital of the Teutonic Order, its old name based on the seven-colored alphabet is "Red Q".

The gate is documented as early as 1377 as part of the last city wall and replaced the gate tower of the penultimate city wall, the White Tower, formerly known as the Inner Spittler Gate. The associated road led in the direction of Schwabach, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Donauwörth. The building was rebuilt in 1557 by Jörg Unger to form the round tower that is still standing, and a new gate was built next to it. At the end of the 19th century, the facility was rebuilt and adapted to the demands of growing traffic; more arches were erected and the ditch was dammed. The archway erected in the process was destroyed in World War II.[2]

After modifications, the tower was used as a bunker during World War II. Since July 2006 it has housed the library and archive of the Nuremberg Garrison Museum.[3] The armory of the gate stands empty today.

The wall area between Spittlertor and Westtor is called Spittlertormauer. The alley Spittlertormauer inside the wall and the main street Spittlertorgraben outside were named after it. Both lead north. To the east of the gate, Nuremberg's red-light district stretches along part of the Frauentormauer.
