The Westhafen covers an area of around 430,000 square meters.

The administration and storage buildings on the three harbor basins are visible from afar. With its slender central tower, the administration building dominates the harbor complex. The slender, tapering tower with a viewing gallery, lantern and pyramid roof is reminiscent of a town hall tower or lighthouse and is the landmark of the Westhafen for arriving ships.

The listed harbor complex is still used for shipping today. However, parts of the storage and warehouse buildings are no longer needed for harbor operations: the converted grain silo now houses the newspaper department of the Prussian Cultural Heritage State Library. The northern harbor basin was filled in in 2001.
