The Victory Column with the golden sculpture on top is one of the most famous landmarks in Berlin. The viewing platform offers a panoramic view of the Tiergarten and the surrounding area.

The winged sculpture on the Victory Column in the west of the city shines from afar. What is actually meant to commemorate German victories against other nations has long since taken on a different meaning: The Victory Column is closely linked to the Love Parade, because the final rally took place every year at the feet of the Golden Angel, as Berliners usually call the figure of the goddess of victory.

There is also a viewing point on the 69-meter-high column that promises a great view of the Tiergarten and the nearby Bellevue Palace.

Once a symbol of German victories

The Victory Column was designed by Johann Heinrich Strack. After construction began in 1865, it took eight years to complete. The winged figure on top was designed by Friedrich Drake.

The monument is intended to commemorate Germany's victories against Denmark, Austria and France between 1864 and 1871. It is not just the victorious pose of the sculpture that indicates this: there are gold-plated gun barrels on the columns and the mosaic by Anton von Werner in the ambulatory also shows warlike scenes.

Today a viewing point and landmark

Hardly anyone in the city knows the original function of the Victory Column; most people think of the big parties at the Love Parade. It is also known as a viewing point.

The viewing platform is located directly under the Golden Angel. Anyone with a bit of stamina who climbs the 285 steps will be rewarded with a great view of the Grosser Tiergarten, the nearby Bellevue Palace and other parts of Berlin. The Victory Column has long been one of Berlin's landmarks, alongside the TV tower and the Brandenburg Gate.
