The castle in its current form was built in 1898, whereby the history of the castle and park complex goes back at least to the 18th century. Around 1910 it passed from private ownership to the property of the German Reich. In the following period it was used as a hospital for the Königsbrück military training area.

Already around 1742 a manor was occupied. In 1847, construction work on the palace grounds began, which lasted around 50 years. In 1898 the sewing machine manufacturer Bruno Naumann, who had been the owner for five years, rebuilt the palace in neo-Renaissance style. He was followed in 1903 by Walter Naumann, who lived in Schmorkau until 1917. As early as 1907 he had sold large parts of his other properties to the German Empire, which laid out the military training area on the Königsbrücker Heide. After 1917 Schmorkau Castle served as an officers' mess.
