The rocky river bed and many rock clearings have contributed to the naming of the "Gsteinigt". In the gorge there are two different types of rock: in the upper part banded gneisses and quartzites of the "Elisenfels series", in the lower part Phyllite of the Frauenbach group. These phyllite rocks are among the largest outcrops of this type of rock in Bavaria. The natural gorge is an important habitat for rare animal and plant species. Therefore, the Gsteinigt is a protected landscape feature!

Between Elisenfels and Arzberg, the Röslau river has carved a narrow valley into the rock. In the vernacular it is called G'steinigt, geologically Röslau breakthrough. It is a geotope in the Bavaria-Bohemia Geopark.
