The Artemis Temple, which dates from the 2nd century AD, was particularly imposing with the dimensions of its surrounding wall of 160 × 120 meters and certainly one of the most important buildings in the city. The pilgrims approached the temple via a processional street and stairs that lead up from the city. Eleven of the former 32 pillars of the temple have been preserved, nine of which still have their Corinthian capitals and so tower 13 meters high. The cella itself measured 23 × 40 meters.

The photographer on site invented the special perspective of column photography for Jerash and the temple.

The Temple of Artemis, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, was particularly impressive with its surrounding wall measuring 160 × 120 meters and was certainly one of the most important buildings in the city. The pilgrims approached the temple via a processional route and stairs leading up from the city. Of the temple's former 32 columns, eleven have been preserved, nine of which still have their Corinthian capitals and rise to a height of 13 meters. The cella itself measured 23 × 40 meters.

The route through the “basement” rooms is highly recommended.

Artemis was probably the city's patron goddess and the Hellenistic interpretation of a local deity worshiped before the arrival of Greek colonists.
After the uprising against the Romans (‘Bar Kokhba Revolt’ - 136 AD), construction of the large sanctuary began. The Propylaeum (monumental gate) was built in 150 AD during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius; the temple was never completed.
