the "Rauhe Haus" is not rough at all, but rather charitable. Today a foundation on whose premises schools, social facilities and senior citizens' homes are united. A quiet lake with tall, old trees centers the beautiful complex. A short detour there is always worthwhile.

The Rauhe Haus was founded in 1833 by Johann Hinrich Wichern. This makes the foundation one of the oldest diaconal institutions in Germany. Today, 1,200 employees work at the Rauhe Haus at over 100 locations in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Together, they create various care options for more than 3,000 people.

Johann Hinrich Wichern, who was only 25 years old at the time, wanted to establish a rescue village for the neglected and orphaned children from the slums. He convinced leading Hamburg politicians and merchants of his plan and was given a cottage, "Ruges Haus", along with the land, by the Hamburg syndic Karl Sievekind.

In 1833, the official founding meeting took place in the hall of the Hamburg Stock Exchange. On October 31, 1833, Wichern and his sister moved into the "Ruge Haus", which was popularly known as the "Rauhen Haus". By the end of the year, Wichern had taken in twelve boys there. At that time, the children were admitted at the age of eleven to twelve and released at the age of sixteen. From 1835, girls were also admitted.

In the first months and years, the number of children grew so much that new buildings had to be built. This created a Christian colony of small houses based on a family principle. Twelve children lived in their own house with a caregiver. This enabled the children to practice their social behavior in these small groups.

Wichern ritualized the children's lives in a child-friendly manner in a structured rotation. Sundays and public holidays were separated by everyday life dominated by school and work. The aim of education was above all to promote the children's individual abilities,

responsibility and ability to live in a community.

The Rauhe Haus was successful: the 1000th new child was admitted as early as the beginning of the 1870s.

In 1843, Wichern added a training center to the Rauhe Haus.

There he trained his "brothers", who were later called "deacons".
