"The Zanthier memorial is located in the center of Sophienhof opposite the mountain farmhouse. It serves as a reminder of the pioneer of sustainable forestry, Hans Dietrich von Zanthier.
Mr. von Zanthier, born in 1717, was appointed forest and hunting master by Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode in Sophienhof in 1747. The districts of the former Grafschaft Hohenstein and the Schierker district were subordinate to him. In the following year Zanthier left the small Harz town and went to Ilsenburg. There he founded a forestry school in 1763, which later became Germany's first forestry academy.
