The building, erected in 1962 at the Friedrichstraße station in Berlin, popularly known as the "Tränenpalast", was used by the SED dictatorship until 1990 as a check-in hall for the departure from the GDR to West Berlin. Like hardly any other place, the pavilion reminds of the division of Germany and the destinies connected with it. Many had to say goodbye to friends and relatives. East Germans were painfully reminded that the border was closed to them, others fainted on the harassing border controls.
In 2011, the Foundation for the History of the Federal Republic of Germany opened the permanent exhibition "GrenzErfahrungen, Alltag der deutschen Teilung" in the listed building. With original objects, documents, films and eyewitness interviews, she conveys the effects of division and border on the daily lives of Germans.
