He was the round-bellied house servant and handyman of the Jesuit Fathers. In Lier he was known by everyone for his merits as a proud standard-bearer of the harmony, the friendly seller of almanacs, support and membership cards of all kinds, a purebred Lierse popular figure prominently present at all festivities. Everyone always greeted him as Wardje.

Wardje is so well known as a folk figure that he also belongs to the Lierse Giants.
The Lier Giants only come out on exceptional occasions and very rarely leave Lier territory. Felix Timmermans called them 'the cardboard bodyguards of the great parties.'
In the traditional Ommegang, the giant train is completed by three mythical beasts, three floats and about twenty walking horses.
Lier also has six city giants: Grimmara, Pallieter and Marieke with their triplets Mit, Tuur and Piet.
