These sand dunes are the remnants of the sandbanks of the Diestian Sea, which some 7 million years ago, when the Diestian Sea flooded the northern part of present-day Belgium. Parallel to this coastline, which was oriented northeast-southwest, were a large number of sandbanks consisting of moderately coarse sands. When the Diestiaanzee withdrew, the sandbanks came to lie above water and these dunes were created.
