Like the neighboring Zollverein colliery, the former coking plant has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Here you can learn about industrial history, visit the factory swimming pool and even go ice skating in winter. Where high-quality coke was once produced, there is now a café and restaurant with a beer garden.

“Probably the most fascinating place for ice skating in Germany” according to the Marco Polo travel guide: at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Zollverein Foundation offers four weeks of ice skating fun for the whole family with the ZOLLVEREIN® ice rink. Skating artists and everyone who wants to become one can do pirouettes there, dash across the ice or carefully take their first steps on the smooth ice surface.
But the impressive industrial architecture, the mirror-smooth 1,800 square meter area along the imposing coke ovens, rust-red pipes and high chimneys also offer a unique experience for spectators. After dark, when the light installation by Jonathan Speirs and Mark Major bathes the Zollverein coking plant in colorful light, the skaters experience a very special kind of winter romance. A cozy winter village offers refreshment with hot drinks and snacks.
