South of the Nieuwmarkt, you can reach the southern church - the Zuiderkerk - via St. Antoniesbreestraat. The oldest Protestant church in Amsterdam was built between 1603 and 1611 according to the plans of Hendrik de Keyser, who also found his final resting place here.

A Renaissance-style gate leads to the former cemetery that surrounds the church. The Zuiderkerk itself has an 80-meter-high tower that you can climb to enjoy the magnificent view of Amsterdam. The carillon, whose bells were cast by the famous François Hemony, rings every Thursday between 12 and 1 p.m.

The last service was held in the Zuiderkerk in 1929, and the impending decay could only be prevented when the city bought and restored the building. The permanent exhibition of the Infocentrum voor Ruimtelijke Ordening en Wonen, now housed in the Zuiderkerk, gives an impression of the urban development of Amsterdam. In addition to the historical growth of the city, the exhibition also focuses on future planning. The fact that around 2,000 apartments have been built in the area around the Zuiderkerk in recent years makes the church the ideal exhibition location.
