The small Rhine island at the bottom of Lake Constance has an important past. The earliest traces lead back to the time of the pile dwellers. The first abbot of the monastery of St. Gallen, Otmar, died on November 16, 759 on the island of Werd, after being deposed for political reasons when he was a Frankish convict. The abbot was buried on the island, but was brought back to their monastery ten years later by the monks from St. Gallen and buried a second time. In the 10th century, a chapel was built on the former grave of St. Otmar, which became a place of pilgrimage.

A small detour to the island of Werd is worth the detour 100%. Especially in the afternoon, when the sun is behind you, you get a great panorama of Stein am Rhein.

Highly Recommended. The monks sometimes walk around between the visitors and you can talk to them. About half the island is private, closed off for the monks.

Unique monastery island. It is said to have been inhabited for 1200 years, currently by 5 monks.
The name comes from the term "Ward", island and thus the term for "river island".
A wooden pedestrian bridge about 200 m long leads from Eschenz to the island. The monastery, also known as St. Othmar Monastery, is located there.
