During his lifetime, the last Baron of Ziegelsdorf Castle, Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach, had this magnificent mausoleum built in the middle of the forest. At the time, this impressive structure cost just 150,000 marks. The Baron died in 1895 and was buried here in a sarcophagus bearing a coat of arms. A white marble angel sits enthroned above him, holding his protective hands over the grave.

In a day and age when such imposing buildings are hardly affordable, the mausoleum remains a testament to the wealth and sense of style of bygone days. Unfortunately, this ornate building is in serious danger of decay.

Bombastic building with a history threatened by decay, stands ingrown in the middle of the forest

In the meantime there are signs "Private property - no entry" and "Photography prohibited". That is probably also the reason why nothing is signposted. It's a shame, actually. One can only hope that someone will take care of it in the future and that it will not expire. That would be a shame, because it really is a very impressive building and a place with a special charisma.

In the process of decaying mausoleum. Stand alone in the forest.

The mausoleum Ziegelsdorf is the burial place of the baron Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach. The listed building is completely overgrown in a forest called sheep wood on a hill south of Ziegelsdorf in Upper Franconia and is the only mausoleum in Coburg next to the Ducal Mausoleum on Glockenberg in Coburg.

The burial place of Baron Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach has something mystical about it. The "no trespassing" sign above the entrance creates an even more mysterious spooky atmosphere. A place where you don't want to stay long.

the mausuleum is actually not part of the Steinlegendenweg but I think this mystical place has to be mentioned. Unfortunately there is no information board because it is privately owned.

I was walking through the forest, looking for the mausoleum. Then it suddenly appeared in front of me, huge, impressive and overgrown in the forest! :-) An impressive building!
The Ziegelsdorf mausoleum is the burial place of Baron Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach. It was completed in 1897, two years after his death.

The Ziegelsdorf Mausoleum was built as a burial site for Baron Hans Georg Friedrich Werner von Seebach. Werner von Seebach was the last descendant of the Ziegelsdorf von Seebach family. He died in 1895 and was reburied in the mausoleum two years later. The park surrounding the mausoleum became overgrown over time, and the building itself suffered from vandalism and lack of maintenance. In 1992, the Free State of Bavaria undertook renovation work. I wonder who the owner actually is.
