Although the actual fighting took place north of it in the open field and partly also in the localities (especially Aspern and Eßling), Napoleon made a transition in the Lobau area from Kaiser Ebersdorf over the not yet regulated, flooding Danube. After the battle he withdrew with his troops to the Lobau, which at that time formed an island between the arms of the Danube, and set up his headquarters here for a few weeks. Topographical designations such as Napoleon Street and various monuments, e.g. Napoleon's powder magazine, the French cemetery and the passage of the French as well as the Aspern lion symbolizing Napoleon, are still reminiscent of this today.
Napoleon suffered a defeat near Aspern by the troops of Archduke Charles (equestrian statue on the Heldenplatz in Feinkorn.
