    The Mantingerzand is located northeast of Hoogeveen and was created by the cutting of heathland sods and the presence of sheep in the area. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful shifting sand areas in the Netherlands.

          The Mantingerzand area is very old (dating from the Middle Ages) and was created because humans have influenced the area. Because the area with sand drifts continued to expand, oak and pine trees were planted at the end of the nineteenth century. Juniper berries have also been planted, which grow particularly well on drifting sand. Nice area to stroll around on a Sunday afternoon. Know that you won't be alone :).
