Detached church, separated from the adjacent houses on the Kaai on the west side only by a narrow street, surrounded on the south and north sides by several public gardens, Sacred Heart statue and monument to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars, founded in 1922; against the southern transept arm, funerary monument with calvary for priest P.C. Adriaensens, 1835-1907, some gravestones, crosses and part of the fence of the former cemetery; the latter was transferred to Hekkestraat in 1847.

Church dates from the 17th and was regularly ravaged by fires (lightning strikes) and repeatedly rebuilt and expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The church is centrally located in the historic center a stone's throw from the Scheldt quay, flanked by other historic houses with facades from the 17th and 18th centuries. All this can be admired a stone's throw from the Scheldt quay.

At the rear, near the monument, old remnants of the old village cemetery can still be found.
