In addition to deceased Italian prisoners of war from the First World War, almost 1,500 Italians who perished in Munich from 1939 to 1945 were buried here.

These were not only prisoners of war, but also people who had been deported to Germany for forced labor. Prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp who died of the consequences of imprisonment shortly after liberation were also laid to rest here. "

The Cimitero Militare Italiano with graves of 3249 Italians is located in the new part of the Munich forest cemetery. It was created in 1922 for Italian soldiers who died in captivity during the First World War. After the Second World War, Italians who were initially buried in other Bavarian cemeteries were amalgamated here. A large memorial stone commemorates the Italian victims of both wars. There are also newer monuments to the deceased marines and mountain troops.

"Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you said." However, the many people buried here were by no means divorced in peace, but became victims of the war and an inhuman tyranny.

The most important and at the same time everlasting function of the soldiers' or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is therefore to keep the memory of this suffering alive and – every generation anew (!) – to remind people of the lasting preservation of peace.
