Het Predikheren is a venue for cultural activities in the Belgian city of Mechelen. The city's library is also located there. The Predikheren is located in the buildings of the former preacher or Dominican monastery and the associated monastery church. The monastery was restored between 2011 and 2019. The restoration was part of the Tinelsite urban renewal project in Mechelen. Both the monastery and the church are part of the cultural heritage.
The preachers in Mechelen:
In 1651 preachers from 's-Hertogenbosch came here, expelled as they were by the Eighty Years' War and attracted by the Southern Netherlands, where broad sections of the population had remained Catholic. 1253 was the year of their foundation in 's Hertogenbosch. They had to leave the city in 1629 to move from one city to another for 20 years, each time conquered by Protestant troops. They settled in Mechelen, 400 years after three mendicant orders already present in the city.
As in so many places, the French era meant that this monastery had to close its doors in 1796.

The new city library is housed in the former preacher's convent. The cloisters have been preserved in their original state and blend in with the modern, understated furnishings of the bar and library.

From 2024, the Predikherenkerk will be the place for performances, exhibitions and meetings. But first the church needs a major renovation. Since 2020, we have been tackling the facades, roofs, interior walls and vaults. We will then revive this beautiful building in a special way. We are turning the church into a cultural hotspot and preserving the enormous space of the church.
