The innermost rises to 605 m above sea level. NN in the Upper Harz southeast of Clausthal-Zellerfeld near the national road 242. It flows a few meters behind its source in the Entensumpf, a built in the 16th century by the Clausthal miners in the northeast of Buntenbock pond, which originally served the drinking water supply Clausthals and the first of a total of six barrages forms the innermost. Then the innermost flows through the Upper Nassenwieser pond, the Bärenbrucher pond and the Ziegenberger pond. Through the marsh pond she reaches Buntenbock - the first village through which she flows. South of Buntenbock the Innerste passes the Prinzenteich on the Bundesstraße 241 and turns to the west, then to the north. The valley of the innermost is now remarkably narrow. Wildemann and Lautenthal are the next places, through the middle of which flows the innermost. Here, the innermost with the Grumbach in Wildemann and the lute in Lautenthal records their first tributaries. Next to her on a dam, the route of the disused Innerstetalbahn good to see. The construction of this railway line was at that time made much more difficult by the narrowness of the Innerstetal and the numerous turns of the river. North of Lautenthal, where the valley widens a bit, the innermost flows through the built in the early 1960s Innerstetalsperre and shortly thereafter reaches Langelsheim.
Between Langelsheim, where it leaves the Harz and the Grane flows, and Baddeckenstedt flows a part of the Innerstewas in a karst area underground at 30 to 100 m depth and with up to 3 km distance from the actual river (Langelsheim-Baddeckenstedter channel). Thereafter, the innermost flows through the southwestern city of Salzgitter, namely through the castle park of Salzgitter-Ringelheim. After Salzgitter she reaches Holle, where the nice flows from the left side. Then her water passes the area of the town of Bad Salzdetfurth, where the lamb joins in the district of Groß Düngen. On the southern outskirts of Hildesheim not far from the Marienburg the Beuster flows into the innermost.
After passing through Hildesheim, where it flows through a newly-built hydroelectric dam at the Dammtor, it flows through the town of Sarstedt, where the Bruchgraben joins, and finally flows into the leash itself in the northern part of Ruthe from the right side.
