The underground container on the 76-metre-high Pfingstberg has technical, architectural and construction-historical significance as well as urban planning significance. The facility is an outstanding testament to the creation of a central urban water supply infrastructure in the age of industrialization.

Starting in 1876, drinking water was pumped from the first Potsdam waterworks, Bertinistrasse, into the 4,000 cubic meter elevated tank on the Pfingstberg. After the water works were shut down in 1952, the tank was used to maintain the water pressure in the Potsdam drinking water network for almost four decades.

It was finally shut down in the mid-1990s after the city's drinking water supply had drastically decreased.
