There are no records from the founding period. However, some historians are of the opinion that the first church of the convent founded in the 9th century may have stood here. In the course of its history, Wunstorf has been completely or partially destroyed by fire several times. The churches were not spared either.

For example, in the tower of the town church, spalling caused by heat can clearly be seen on the masonry. Only the chancel and the tower have survived almost unchanged from the Romanesque period. The nave, built from rubble stones, was partially rebuilt around 1700, as dated inscriptions above the north portal and the south portal testify.
As in all Romanesque churches, the chancel is the oldest part of the church. Different versions of the ashlar masonry, especially on the north side, indicate a possible foundation in the 11th century and changes in different epochs. Also on the north side are the remains of walls from earlier additions.
The windows, which originally had round arches, received sandstone walls like the other windows on the south side of the nave when the church was renovated around 1700. The choir got its present form at the end of the century, when it was covered with sandstone groined vaults on round shield arches with a slight kink at the apex. The semi-circular choir arch connects the nave with the choir.

The tower was built around the same time as Sigwards Church in nearby Idensen, around 1130.
