After the death of Erich II in 1584, Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel continued the construction work. The castle lost its residence function. During the Thirty Years' War, about 500 men of the Catholic League under Count Tilly besieged the complex from 1626 to 1635 and redesigned the rooms for their purposes.
Duke George liberated the castle, relocated his residence to Hanover in 1636 and ceded Neustadt to his brother. Thereafter, the castle was until the formation of the district Neustadt am Rübenberge in 1885 only seat of the bailiff and served, for example. as an overnight stop for traveling princes. The bailiff as deputy of the Duke was responsible for the management of the court and the administration.
In 1891 the Kreissparkasse was housed in the castle, where it remained until the construction of a new building on the site of the old south wing of the castle grounds. In 1957/58, another extension was built to accommodate the district administration.
Since its founding in 1997, the Kulturregion Hannover Foundation has been the owner of Landestrost Castle in Neustadt am Rübenberge, which was incorporated into the Foundation's assets by the then Hanover district (now Hanover region). Maintaining and maintaining the castle is a task of the foundation.
