"Alt-Eberstein Castle is strategically located on a hilltop. The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1197. At the end of the 13th century, the Counts of Eberstein ceded the castle to the Margraves of Baden. In addition to expanding the building, the Margraves used it was also used as a residential and widow's house (widow's home). At the end of the 15th century the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. After the Romantic period brought ruins into fashion in the 19th century, the first efforts were made to conserve it."
